Grace Mwende

Woodwork Machakos, Kenya 15+ years

“The wood speaks to me. I just listen and carve what it wants to become.”

— Grace Mwende

The Story

Grace is one of the few female wood carvers in her region of Wamunyu, a town in Machakos County renowned for its woodworking tradition. She was taught by her father, who was one of the most respected carvers in the area.

Her work ranges from small decorative figurines to large statement pieces for homes and offices. Grace specializes in the Kamba carving style, using local hardwoods like mahogany and ebony. Each piece is hand-carved using traditional tools, with the grain of the wood guiding the final form.

Grace is passionate about sustainable sourcing and only uses wood from managed plantations. She believes that art and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand.
