“A basket is not just woven from sisal β it is woven from patience, tradition, and the hope that someone will treasure what my hands have made.”
— Joseph Odhiambo
The Story
Joseph grew up watching his mother weave baskets from sisal fibres in their home near Lake Victoria. What started as helping her dye the fibres soon turned into a lifelong passion for creating functional works of art.
His signature style blends traditional Luo weaving patterns with bold, contemporary color palettes. Each basket takes between two to four weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. Joseph uses only natural dyes sourced from local plants, ensuring every piece is as sustainable as it is beautiful.
Joseph now trains young people in his village, believing that traditional crafts can provide sustainable livelihoods while keeping cultural heritage alive.
